Here is the write up we got in the Tyke Taverner, a quarterly newsletter produced by the fine folks in our local Camra branch (incidentally, you can always pick up a copy of the Tyke Taverner in the pub):
1st Castle Beer Festival
This event was held in late November with over 30 different beers on sale during the period. All beers were delivered through bar mounted hand pumps and so, for this reason alone, only ten beers could be sold at any one time. The event's principle supplier was Old Spot Brewery of Cullingworth who, in view of Bradford City's home game that weekend produced a cask of 'City Gent'. This was just one of ten different brews available from this local brewery. Attendees were also able to sample 'Mince Pie Ale'.
The majority of the beers came from within the Yorkshire region - after a conscious decision by management and some customers that support should be for out local region. This event was the Castle's way of attempting to counter the decline of the pub trade, and to support the innovative breweries of the Yorkshire region.
That this event was a huge success is thanks to all the organisations who provided publicity, all those breweries who supplied the range of beers, all those who worked behind the scenes to ensure the success of the event. The organisers have expressed their thanks to all those people who gave their time and their hard earned cash at this first attempt by the Castle to hold a 'Celebration of Yorkshire Beer'.
The event was spawned in discussions between Paul Chand, Licensee of the Castle and his customers. As he always does with all his offerings, Paul openly discussed which beers should be included in the festival. As you can imagine a huge list was compiled and had to be whittled down to ensure that there was a good mix of beer types, strengths and flavours. It was also decided that, in view of Paul's ethnicity (his term), there should be a facility to combine the flavours of India within the festival. To this end Paul's wife provided superb Indian snacks and was kept very busy by a never ending stream of hungry customers.
Much was learned about the manpower and organisation needed for this type of event and it has been decided to put this knowledge to the test in early Spring 2009. This event will be run along similar lines in that it will be a celebration of Yorkshire Beers.
Some of those breweries supplying beers this time were Roosters, Salamander, Old Bear, Naylor's, Goose Eye, Brass Monkey, White Rose, Saltaire, Elland and Kelham Island. In addition there was the 'honorary' Yorkshire beer - Darkstar Hophead, and a few guest beers such as Okell's, Lancaster & Shepherd Neame.
There will be plenty more to consider for next time, so watch out for it.
